Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s (Daniels) devastatingly funny new film stars Michelle Yeoh as Evelyn Wang in a wildly imaginative action-packed adventure across the multiverse. Evelyn must explore other universes connecting with the lives she could have led to save the world.
Daniels, known for their absurdist exploration of humanity in their previous directorial effort Swiss Army Man, have reached a stylistic pinnacle with Everything Everywhere All At Once, which lives up to its title wholeheartedly in its insanely original and kaleidoscopic execution. This film is visually stunning, full of mind-blowing special effects and masterfully choreographed action set pieces. The film’s script is very cleverly conceived, with several odd details early on paying off in hilarious and thoroughly satisfying ways. Each universe Evelyn explores grants her a different skillset from her different life choices, providing her with many unconventional ways to take down her enemies. To activate her powers from another universe, Evelyn must do something weird (statistically unlikely) in her own universe, leading to some hysterically shocking moments of socially unacceptable behaviour.
Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) is perfectly cast as Evelyn, in the most emotionally rich, human performance of this year. Ke Huy Quan, famous for his role as Short Round in the second Indiana Jones film, is endlessly charming as Evelyn’s kind and quirky husband Waymond in his first performance in over 20 years.
Everything Everywhere All At Once is a heart-warming, life-affirming piece of pure cinema reaching every emotional peak possible, and deserves to be seen by everyone, everywhere, all at once.
